Jeep Front Emblem Replacement

Front Jeep Emblem Swap

Part #:

I never really liked the chrome emblem on the front of the Jeep JK's, so I picked up a black one to replace it. You could even put these on the side if you wanted, though they well never replace the stamped Jeep from the old Jeeps.

Additional Parts:
Jeep Emblem Matte Black - 68185492AA

Tools Needed:
Blue painters tape
Dental Floss or Fishing line
(trim removal tool or plastic putty knife can be used)
Alcohol or adhesive remover

OEM Emblem Removal
I purchased a matte black logo that goes on the attitude version.
The OEM emblem is held on by some double-sided foam tape which can be a real pain to get off sometimes. I was able to get mine off
Before you jump right in and pull off the old OEM emblem we need to make sure that we can get the new Emblem aligned correctly. I put some blue painters tape around where the emblem need to go. You can also measure, but the tape makes it much easier.
Now there are a few ways to get the letters off. So I'll give you a couple that normally work. You can use a blow dryer or leave the Jeep in the sunlight for a little while to heat up the letters. Do not use a heat gun, the grill is plastic and you can bubble the paint, or deform the grill.

Dental Floss - This works really well, but you will find that it breaks pretty easy, so take it slow. It does leave the tape behind, but it's pretty safe not scratching the paint.

Fishing line - Works better than dental floss, but I have heard that you run a greater risk of scratching the paint.

Plastic prybar/trim removal tool - I had a set of trim removal tools, so I slid one behind the letters and they came off pretty easy. You can also use one of the plastic putty knives like you would find for spreading bondo.
Once you get all the letters off, all you need to do is gently remove the rest of the tape. It came off pretty easy by just rolling it with my fingers.
Now clean off the remaining adhesive and tape. I tried some goo gone that I had, and eventually just used some alcohol to get it all off.
Installing the new emblem
I think it was harder to remove the new emblem from the packaging that it came in then to remove the old one from the Jeep. The emblem has tape on both sides to keep it aligned and cover the tape on the back.
Flip the emblem over and remove the plastic from the back.
Align the new emblem carefully, you really only get one chance at this. The tape is sticky and will grip pretty quick. The painters tape really helps to get it aligned correctly. Once you get it in place push down really good on each of the letters to get it to stick to the grill.
Remove the plastic from the front and the blue painters tape. 17-Aug-2016img src="/Mods/JKmods/EmblemF/thumbnails/IMG_1011.jpg" width="150" height="99" border="0" />
Step back and admire your work. I prefer the black emblem on the yellow over the chrome.

Common Sense and Safety should always be observed when working on your vehicle or doing modifications. Jackstands, wheel blocks, disconnecting the battery are a few of the basic safety precautions that should be used and may not be mentioned in the write ups on this site. You are responsible for your own installation, these write ups are a helpful guideline and should not be taken as an official installation instruction. My write up may be different from the kits currently out there, so alwasy double check the manufacturers installation instructions when installing anything. I try to keep the site up to date with changes that have occured as I discover them, but may not have the latest unless someone lets me know. If you feel that an install is above your capabilities after reading my write ups, I recommend getting together with a club and getting some help. Only a few times have I needed to employe some actual help from a shop to get something done. Usually welding or A/C work. While I have spent many years working on mechanical systems, I am not an expert, nor do I pretend to be one. I hope these write ups have been useful to you.
